Rules
Rules sort the icons on your desktop into zones, including new ones as they arrive, so you do not have to drag them.
How an icon finds its zone
Each Desktop zone you make can have rules. A rule matches an icon by its File extension, a Name pattern such as *invoice*, its Item type (file, folder or shortcut) or its Age in days. An icon goes to a zone when any of that zone's rules match. Folder zones always show their whole folder, so they have no rules.
Open a zone's rules with Edit rules… on its title bar menu, or pick the zone on the Rules page. Choose Add rule to add one.
Match order
When more than one zone's rules match, the zone higher in the Match order list wins. Select a zone in that list and choose Move up or Move down to change the order. Icons that match no rule go to the Desktop zone, which is always last and catches everything else.
Icons you placed by hand
If you drag an icon into a zone yourself, it is pinned there and rules leave it alone. Click its pin to let rules sort it again.
Try before you apply
The Preview list shows where each icon is now and where it would go. Nothing moves until you choose Apply; Revert throws your changes away.
